The Degrading Facilitators: Deathmask of Manhattan
2022
30" x 10" x 3"
Styrofoam, gelatin, mycellium
This project culminated in a sculptural and performance piece: a scaled reproduction of Manhattan, enveloped in a gelatin and mycelial mixture. Over three weeks, the sculpture transformed as the mycelium flourished, creating a living "death mask" of the island. This work symbolizes the shift from destructive capitalist and colonial practices toward a collective, posthumanist ideology that honors all forms of life. It embodies a commitment to rejecting the island's historical legacies of racism, segregation, and ecological harm, envisioning a more inclusive and sustainable future.
This project was created in collaboration with Kareena Willis and Lila Feldman for the UNHCR Innovation Service: Project Unsung and Speculative Storytelling Collab Course with Barbara Adams and Jane Pirone.
Below you will find the text provided for the audience during the first exhibition of the sculpture and performance.
