Bird of Paradise
2020, 13' x 8' x 15' vinyl table cloth
This extra-large inflatable sculpture is created with picnic-variety, vinyl tablecloths. These materials, typically reserved for celebrations like children's birthday parties, are transformed into an imposing abstract form that takes up space and commands attention with bright colors. The sculpture explores sexual forms and the complex realities of psycho-sexual castration in motherhood, challenging conventional expectations of femininity and domesticity. Despite its confronting subject matter, the sculpture encourages play and joy, inviting the viewer to interact with the work in a lighthearted and whimsical way.
