Made in Paradise: Hope is a thing with wings, dancing

2023, 4' x 13' x 7' Salt, steel, synthetic hair

This sculptural work imagines a speculative, posthuman figure shaped by animistic belief systems and alternative evolutionary narratives. The figure materializes invisible structures of belief, confronting false hierarchies of power embedded in distorted interpretations of evolutionary theory. By foregrounding ornament, beauty, and excess, the work challenges narratives that frame dominance and efficiency as natural order. Salt and synthetic hair create tension between fragility and artificiality, suggesting evolution as a process shaped not only by survival, but by desire, aesthetics, and play—forces largely written out of dominant scientific and cultural legacies.

This work addresses the intersection between speculative fiction and false stories of evolution, allowing sexual selection to be the driver of evolution along with the incorporation of dreams and mythology. This work aims to be both accessible and empowering through the creation of new gods that are exemplify Posthuman tenents of sexual equality and playful expression. Through the use of synthetic hair and salt, the artist invites the viewer to contemplate the mystical and the quotidien domestic as a storytelling mechanism that shapes our understanding of the world around us.

As the gods cavort and twist in an endless dance, they challenge us to question our assumptions and embrace the diversity of life.

This sculpture is part of a series called Made In Paradise.
