Oat seeds
This project examines the use of living matter to create resilient sustainable materials. Featured here are two projects that utilize oat seeds, which grow around a predetermined structure, resulting in a lace-like pattern formed by their roots.
This work is conceptually anchored in Édouard Glissant's theories of rhizomatic growth and identity. While the roots do not represent rhizomes in a strict botanical sense, they extend horizontally, interweaving to create a complex tapestry that contextualizes the forms within a broader narrative.
The larger design, depicted at the bottom, was hand-drawn in homage to the rugs of my childhood, while the first lace shown was cultivated on a 3D-printed geometric plate. Through these projects, I aim to highlight the dynamic interplay between nature and design, reflecting Glissant's ideas of interconnectedness and identity as fluid and ever-evolving and stemming from multiple sources.
