At The Core Of It: Speculative Land Exchange

2022 - Ongoing

Land

The conceptual framework of this project explores and complicates the adage, "This land is my blood," by examining concepts of place, displacement, ancestry, and ownership. The proposed concept involves selecting three global locations to serve as sites for a triangular land exchange. In this speculative endeavor, a core section of land will be extracted from each location and relocated to the others. Each resulting void will be filled with land from the other locations.

This project raises critical questions: When land is moved, how do people relate to it? Will communities erect barriers to declare it part of their homeland? The traditional notion that land is static is challenged, relating to how natural elements like sand, fertile soil, and tectonic plates are in constant motion but their mutablity is rarely acknowledged.

How do we perceive our connection to land that has been displaced? Does it retain its sense of place, or does its new location strip it of relevance in terms of human or ecological history? This project invites a deep reflection on the relationship between people and land, prompting us to reconsider our understanding of identity, belonging, and the dynamic nature of the earth itself.

This is a conceptual exploration, and many questions remain regarding its implementation, ethical considerations, and potential impacts on communities and ecosystems.
